Asterisk Vs. Trixbox
I resently got a chance to reinstall and reconfigure my Telecom system which i configured long ago using Asterisk 1.2 So, i gotta chance to try something which can add some feature which digium deleloped over a a long time span .
I was facinated from long about athe feature and services which fenolity was marketing which was said to be “business class telephony platform” as i was using asterisk back from asterisk version 1.2 which was diong good on my old 256 Mb ram Intel P4 1.6 Ghz processor.I downloaded Trixbox CE 2.4 from from trixbox.com.
Since it was using Centos 5.1 i upgraded my Old Pc to 512 MB ram in order to avoid any performance problem.
Installation Was smooth i was said to Select options such as Keyboard , Time Zone as we do when installing any RedHat based distribution which taken approx. an Hour to install. I navigated to the ip address of my installed system where i was greeted with graphical interface. as i logged into the admin it was easy to configure extensions with Freepbx which was not necessary as any Linux admin will be much Confertable doing that from command line.
Navigating to /etc/asterisk folder contains different file structure with multiple files for the same thing as extensions.conf,extension_custom.conf which was unnecessary as Asterisk is already very organised stuff. Linux System Information can be viewd directly from linux box.
Dial plans are complicated like once used for 2,5,6,7 or 8 extensions which is 911|900X|8XXX|*[13]|9011X+#|*[65]X|9[469]11|9[2-9]XXXXXXXXX|*[78][456]XXXXXX having so many first digits makes it complicated and all of them should not be present in a customized business Asterisk Box.a2billing is good but i can install it straight away.
So at last which is good for me ? Well i should decide what should be on my system and all extensions which are active should be known to me and don’t like things which i wouldn’t need. From my experience simple but effective dialplan works best on my Telecom box.Well Trixbox is ok because it is simple but geeks will never prefer it.It will be still easier for me to install Asterisk 1.4 on Centos 4.4 final and Get thing working under my control.i just remember lines on the begining of a chapter of book Asterisk:The Future of Telephony.
“Things should be made simple but not simpler..”
