Asterisk Vs. Trixbox

May 27th, 2008 | Posted in Extras

I resently got a chance to reinstall and reconfigure my Telecom system which i configured long ago using Asterisk 1.2 So, i gotta chance to try something which can add some feature which digium deleloped over a a long time span .

I was facinated from long about athe feature and services which fenolity was marketing which was said to be “business class telephony platform” as i was using asterisk back from asterisk version 1.2 which was diong good on my old 256 Mb ram Intel P4 1.6 Ghz processor.I downloaded Trixbox CE 2.4 from from trixbox.com.

Since it was using Centos 5.1 i upgraded my Old Pc to 512 MB ram in order to avoid any performance problem.

Installation Was smooth i was said to Select options such as Keyboard , Time Zone as we do when installing any RedHat based distribution which taken approx. an Hour to install. I navigated to the ip address of my installed system where i was greeted with graphical interface. as i logged into the admin it was easy to configure extensions with Freepbx which was not necessary as any Linux admin will be much Confertable doing that from command line.

Navigating to /etc/asterisk folder contains different file structure with multiple files for the same thing as extensions.conf,extension_custom.conf which was unnecessary as Asterisk is already very organised stuff. Linux System Information can be viewd directly from linux box.

Dial plans are complicated like once used for 2,5,6,7 or 8 extensions which is 911|900X|8XXX|*[13]|9011X+#|*[65]X|9[469]11|9[2-9]XXXXXXXXX|*[78][456]XXXXXX having so many first digits makes it complicated and all of them should not be present in a customized business Asterisk Box.a2billing is good but i can install it straight away.

So at last which is good for me ? Well i should decide what should be on my system and all extensions which are active should be known to me and don’t like things which i wouldn’t need. From my experience simple but effective dialplan works best on my Telecom box.Well Trixbox is ok because it is simple but geeks will never prefer it.It will be still easier for me to install Asterisk 1.4 on Centos 4.4 final and Get thing working under my control.i just remember lines on the begining of a chapter of book Asterisk:The Future of Telephony.

“Things should be made simple but not simpler..”

VoIP Providers Review

March 22nd, 2008 | Posted in VoIP Providers Review

Comparing VoIP providers and VoIP Services aren’t that easy since some VoIP providers even after providing decent service can’t Control factors like Network Latency which may be very according to the Internet Service Provider. It’s not like judging Operating Systems and Softwares.

VoIP reviewer all over the internet comming with different influencing opinions and Companies.Usually a small number of Voip provoders are covered for the VoIP review from hundred’s of VoIP providers available in the United States alone.Even major VoIP players like icallglobe or iConnectHere.

Another factor which influences is the underlying network a person which is using 2 Mbps Lease line will always get a better quality then a person which is over a Low speed Internet Link.

Available VoIP provider Infrastructure often plays a important role,Since different Network topology provides different result between any two End points. Say Network Connectivity between A and B will not be same as Between B and C.

If we compare VoIP providers according to How Expansive server or routers they use even with the list of available compression codecs.. reviews of service quality are likely to be determined by a variety of factors.

Chosing the VoIP Providers depands upon the the End User Needs and preferences such as Support, quality or Cost. Following are good reviews but at last it still depands which will prove best for you:

Other functional aspects of calling such as Telecom billing,Routing, call services are handled by Call Agent which controlled different media gateways which can be anywhere around the globe over a Internet Link ( usually Broadband ).These Media gateways can as disperse as PSTN Networks like E1 or an ATM ,IP Network connected to the Ethernet port of a computer systems,Soft switch connects call between them transparantly peer tp peer ( End points ) .Soft_switch generally resides in a building owned by Telecom or VOIP company.

VoIP - Voice Over IP

March 20th, 2008 | Posted in VOIP

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP ) is a protoco optimized for the transmission of voice through the Internet or other packet switched networks using VOIP Codecs and VoIP is often used to Define Real Time Voice Transmission instead of the protocol implementing it. VoIP is also known as IP Telephony , Internet telephony , Broadband telephony , Broadband Phone and Voice over Broadband .Regular house phones i.e Traditional Phones can make VOIP Calls using analog telephone adapter (ATA) provided by the VOIP company or purchased from a third party VOIP Hardware Vender.

Telecom or Networking Companies which provides VoIP service are commonly referred to as VOIP Providers, and protocols which are used to carry voice signals over the Internet(IP network ) are commonly referred to as Voice over IP or VoIP protocols. They are commercial realizations of the experimental Network of Network Voice Protocol (1973) invented for the ARPANET providers. Main Advantage of VOIP Over The Other Networks is due to utilization of single network to carry voice and data creating a Unified Communication Environment,Becouse users have existing underutilized network capacity that can carry VoIP for no additional cost for End Users. VoIP to VoIP phone calls are mostly free, while VoIP to public switched telephone networks, PSTN , in which the End User ( VOIP User) need have to pay the cost.

Voice over IP protocols carry telephony signals as encoded digital audio, typically reduced in data rate using VOIP data compression codecs in which data encapsulated in a data packet stream over IP.

There are two types VoIP calling : Direct outward Diling (DOD) and Direct Inward Dialing (DID) which need access numbers . DID will connect the caller directly to the VoIP user while access numbers require the caller to input the extension number of the VoIP user.
